2012 SAR Racing Season begins with the Sun Run 5k and 10k

Greg Wenneborg January 27, 2012

The 2012 SAR racing season is now officially underway with the Sun Run 10K and 5K in the history books! It can be tough training through the holidays, but with some of the lightening fast times recorded on the flat, fast courses, the winter hard work paid off!

Some runners use the Sun Run as a starting point for their season, to see where their fitness stands going into the spring. While other runners are already in great shape and hoped to acquire early points for The Running Shop Grand Prix! Whether you ran to race, find motivation, or partake in the post-race pancakes, Coach Greg Wenneborg and all the Pima Community College Track and Field athletes thank you for supporting their race!

The Sun Run 5K was the first to start on race morning and Aaron Braun from Flagstaff ran an amazing 14:02 (that’s 4:31 pace!) to easily win the overall spot and the $100 time bonus (sub 15:00). Aaron generously donated his prize money back to the Pima T&F program…thank you Aaron! Former U of A standout Maggie Callahan won the women’s 5K with a time of 17:06, placing third overall. In the 10K, Ronnie Buchanan from Maricopa, AZ was first to cross the line in 31:56. On the women’s side, it was Paula Morrison in 37:09. The winners were awarded technical shirts and gift certificates provided by The Running Shop and original Sun Run art work. Great job to our winners!  Full results can be found here!

The Craig Dabler Jewelers Kids Dash is growing more and more each year! This year, we had 81 kids ages 1-12 participate in the event! Our goal with the Dabler Jewelers Kids Runs is to encourage kids to have fun with exercise, make friends and spend time outdoors! Next year, the 2013 Sun Run will have a more official Kids Run with longer distances for the older kids.

Pancakes anyone? The Pima Track and Field team was cooking race morning, serving hot pancakes, sausages and fruit to over 600 runners, walkers and their families! We hope you relaxed in the sunshine, enjoyed a warm breakfast and caught up with running friends after your hard run!

Thanks to our amazing 2012 sponsors: Sharon Bart and The Running Shop, Littlered Media, Schnakenberg Financial, Prescription Lab Compound Pharmacy, IntelliTech, L&J Design Consulting, Riccitello Law Firm, and Craig Dabler Jewelers. Your support of our event is greatly appreciated! And also THANK YOU to the runners who donated additional money directly to the Pima Track and Field program! Whether you donated a couple of dollars or hundreds (thank you Connie Lopez! You are amazing!), we were able to raise an additional $605 for the PCC runners! The generosity of the Tucson running community is outstanding and, in return, we want to make the Sun Run even better each year for you!

Also, the Sun Run would never “run” smoothly without the help of our volunteers! A big THANK YOU to the following: Steve and Sheryl Felde (their help is unmeasurable), Gar and Pam Stone, Bill Hill, Joannie Rogucci, Marc Janis, Janet Holland, Royce Marion, Roger Shanley, Yvonne Nollman, Connie Lopez (again, amazing), Gina Slaby (fresh off the Olympic Trials), Annelie Messingham and Marti Ackerman.

If you were unable to attend the awards ceremony, please stop by The Running Shop to pick up your award.

Thank you for supporting the 2012 Sun Run 10K/5K and the 2012 Pima Track and Field athletes! We hope you have a healthy and FAST 2012 racing season!
