Sun Run Race Report 2011

Greg Wenneborg January 30, 2011

After unpredictable January weather the past several years, we thought about changing the name of our event, but lo and behold, the 2011 Sun Run lived up to its name!!!  Runners still donned gloves and the occasional beanie, but it was a gorgeous day to race along the fast paths of Reid Park!

This has been a difficult month in our city.  We lost great members of our community, including fellow runner Gabe Zimmerman.  It seems that everyone is doing their part to help put the pieces back together and recover.  It was great to see the spirit of our running community thriving on this day and to see good people coming together to do something we all love…

Returning 2010 Sun Run Champion, Craig Curley, broke the tape in the 10K two minutes ahead of the remaining field in 30:16.  Stephanie Wenneborg won for the women in 38:23.  Overall Masters were Polly Campbell, second female overall, in 38:53 and for the Masters men it was Shaun Haley, 4th overall in 33:28.

Stephen Shaefer, a training buddy of Craig’s, dominated the 5K field by almost two minutes as well, winning in 15:41.  Jenn Treush won for the women in 19:47.  Andy Roth won the Masters Men division in 19:39 and Melody Mustafa took home the trophy for Masters Women in 23:21.

The 2011 Craig Dabler Jewelers Kids Dash was a success with 50+ kids running their hearts out early in the morning (and thank you to their parents for bringing them out)!  Thank you to Craig Dabler for your sponsorship and to Nadine Wasnik who baked 100 sun-shaped sugar cookies for the kids!

This year, the Sun Run offered 5 year age group awards for the 10K and continued with 10 year age group awards for the 5K.  If you were unable to stay for the awards ceremony, check the results page to see if you were a winner!  Awards are still available at The Running Shop on 3055 N. Campbell Ave.

The Sun Run was the opening race for The 2011 Running Shop’s Desert Grand Prix.  There are 10 races remaining in the 2011 Grand Prix season.

The student-athletes of the Pima Track and Field team not only run super fast, but they can cook super fast too!  50 Pima T&F athletes cooked a pancake breakfast for over 400 runners, walkers and spectators!  They also helped clean-up, return race supplies, man the water stations, course monitor, ride lead bikes, work registration,  direct the kids dash and organize the awards ceremony.

Once again, we are shocked by the generosity of our running community and their donations to the Pima Community College Track and Field programs!  The Sun Run received over $400 in additional donations!  A huge Thank You to runner Connie Lopez and her continued support!

Volunteers are always vital to the success of any event.  Steve and Sheryl Felde top the list in this category.  Thank you to Dave Hill, Maureen Cunningham,  Caroline Gardiner, Jocie Riley, Sandra Heater, Sharon Pascoe, Roger Shanley, Connie Lopez, Mari Diaz, Amelie Messingham, Mike Erickson, Kim Fernandez, Russell Riordon, Royce Marion, Rachel Hilgeford, Marti Ackerman, Christie Bano, Don Branaman, and Stephanie Montano.  I didn’t even realize how many came out to help, but thank you so much for your support.

Finally, we’d like to thank our sponsors Sharon Bart at The Running Shop, Littlered Media, Compound Pharmacy, Schnakenberg Financial and Craig Dabler Jewelers.
