Daves Run For ALS Recap

Mar 18, 2015

Dave’s Run for ALS, the 2015 edition, started off on a calm, clear morning at the beautiful Crossroads at Silverbell Park in Marana. A huge group of volunteers assisted with the setup preparing for the race to come. As always, our volunteers were the very best and a successful event is only possible thanks to them. We apologize if we’ve missed anyone here: Steve and Sheryl Felde, Marti and Stephan Ackermann, Joe Faulk, Linda Whelan, Shirley Hester, Ray Henson, Bill Richardson, Connie Lopez, Randy Accetta, Diane Manzini, Craig Dabler, Michael Miller, Robin Gerard, Michelle Hawk, Chris Fall, Doreen and Glenn Davis, Joe Plassmann, Steve Sheldon, Cindy Schnell, The Moore family, Don Taylor, and Rachel Hilgeford.

Unfortunately, the wind picked up a bit from the south prior to the start of race making the going a little bit tougher than it otherwise would have been. However, some great times were run by many and a good time was had by all. The overall race winner and first male in a very impressive performance was Stephen Schaefer in 16:27. Lucas Tyler (17:28) brought home 2nd place, and Bjorn WastVedt (17:33) came in a close 3rd place. The top female finisher ran a fantastic race finishing 7th overall, well ahead of her nearest competitors, and that was Kate Schwartz who ran a blazing 17:49. Kate was followed by Tia Accetta in 2nd place (18:58) and Katie Keading in 3rd (19:22). Overall Master’s winners were won by last year’s Master’s Running Shop Grand Prix Champions Billy Ramon in 17:55 and Michelle Hawk in 21:16.

We also had two Arizona state age records set by two of our very best and most experienced local runners,  Merry Dearmon, who at age 61 turned in a smoking 22:24, and Paul Robillia who at 78 years young turned in a remarkable time of 24:43.

Following the 5K it was time for the FitKidz and Family 1 Mile Run/Walk. Everyone did a fantastic job out there and had a great time was had by all! Remember the next free FitKidz mile will take place at the Spring Cross Country race in April. Visit the SAR web site for details.

We have many others to thank for this fantastic event including our sponsors and vendors. Huge thanks for the support from our sponsors the Running Shop, Proactive Physical Therapy, Trico and Eegees. Great fun was had after the finish thanks to Petunia the Clown for her wonderful face painting, Proactive Physical Therapy and their free post-race massages, Desert jumps for the Obstacle Course Jumping Castle and Eegees for the refreshing Eegees! We’d also like to thank Marana Parks and recreation, the Marana Police Department and Northwest Fire.
One of the new fun things we added this year was Dave’s Ice Bucket challenge. Dennis Brewer and Daniel Weldon each donated about $100 to the Jim Himelic Foundation. Along with Co-Race Director Steve Outridge, they had huge coolers of ice water dumped over their heads to celebrate! Team Jean raised over $300 for JHF and we all got to meet and praise Jean who is battling ALS herself. Many thanks to all of these folks and everyone who participated in the event for helping the JHF in their fight against this terrible disease.

We’ll see you all next year and we hope you bring some of your friends!

Steve Outridge and Tim Bentley, Co-Race Directors, Dave’s Run for ALS
