Sabino Canyon located in the Coronado National Forest, is one of the most beautiful desert canyons in the American southwest and a true jewel of the Tucson community. SAR’s Sabino Canyon Sunset Run has one goal, to create a race worthy of the Canyon. For 32 years we believe we’ve done just that. This unique 7.4 mile race is designed to capitalize on the majestic nature of Sabino Canyon to provide a unique opportunity to experience the challenges of a great race in a truly magnificent setting.

Capacity is limited and the race fills quickly! This race has reached capacity each of the last four years.

This race is part of The Running Shop Grand Prix, produced by SAR.

Date and Time

The evening of April 14, 2012 at 5:45 PM.
Sunset is at 6:55 PM. Aid stations and finish line will be picked up 105 minutes after the start. If you plan to be out there longer be aware you’ll be on your own. Carry a flashlight!


NEW FOR 2012: Early start time (5:15PM) for 7.4 mile walkers/joggers. Anyone that feels they need the extra time to complete the 7.4 miles can begin at 5:15PM.
NEW FOR 2012: We are having 1.5 mile fun run/walk that will begin 5 minutes after the start of the 7.4 mile race.

Race Distances and Courses

7.4 mile race:
The out and back 7.4 mile paved course along Sabino Creek crosses nine bridges and provides the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Catalina Mountains as the sun sets against them. The course is uphill on the way into the canyon and downhill on the way back, with aid stations at approximately miles 1.6, 3.7 (turn-around point), and 5.8.

Please, no bicycles, strollers, skateboards, roller-blades, or pets allowed on the course.

1.5 mile Fun Run:
The Fun Run follows the same paved path on the Sabino Canyon tram road. The run is not timed, and awards will not be given. Participants will receive the same t-shirt as the 7.4 mile entrants.

Location

Sabino Canyon, at 5900 North Sabino Canyon Road, just north of Sunrise Drive - (map).

Parking

Parking is available in the main parking area ($5 fee collected by Parks Service upon entering the lot, unless you have an annual pass).

Park for free at Canyon View Elementary School (5725 N. Sabino Canyon Road) and Esperero Middle School (5801 N. Sabino Canyon Road).

Please note that parking is not allowed on Sabino Canyon Road north of Sunrise Drive.

Registration

  • Print Registration Form and mail it in. Registration by mail must be postmarked by Friday, April 6, 2012.
  • Register online with a credit card at active.com.
  • Registration is available at Performance Footwear, 5350 E Broadway #170 in the Williams Center. Anyone who registers in-store will be entered into a raffle for a free pair of shoes from Performance. Registration will NOT be available on race day.

Packet Pick-up

Saturday, April 14th, 2011:
9:30am - 12:30pm at Performance Footwear (5350 E Broadway #170 in the Williams Center)
Those who pickup race packets at Performance will be entered into a raffle for a free pair of shoes.

4pm - 5:15pm at Sabino Canyon.

Awards

Awards ceremony will follow the race at 7:30pm.

Awards to the top 3 overall and top masters male and female finishers and the top 3 male and female finishers in five year age groups. The following age groups will be used: 19&Under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70&Over

Friends of Sabino Canyon

A portion of the proceeds from this race will be donated to the Friends of Sabino Canyon’s ‘Save Our Sabino’ campaign to help preserve and restore Sabino Canyon. Please visit their webpage for more information about the organization and their events.

Race Weather

Start-time temperatures are usually near 80 degrees F, clear skies, and no wind. Check out Tucson’s current conditions and forecast so you’ll be race-ready!
