Beneficiaries

Proceeds from this event will go to help the Pima Community College Track and Field and Cross Country Teams.  Pima College offers great educational opportunities to local student athletes through their various athletic teams.

A little information about the Pima Community College Track and Field/Cross Country Teams…

Over 75 student-athletes are on the roster for the 2010-11 Track and Field season.  Both the Track & Field and Cross Country Teams have enjoyed success at the national level in recent years with an individual national champion coming from Pima in three of the last four years.  Pima Cross Country or Track & Field teams have placed in the top 10 at the National Championships 8 times in the last 5 years!  Our last national champion was Cholla High School Alumni Aurora Trujillo.  She won the national title in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the NJCAA National Championships in May of 2009 and set the school record on the way.  The year before that, it was Sahuaro’s Jeremiah Korn in the Shot Put who took home the title.  National caliber alumni Craig Curley competed for Pima and is now a qualifier for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

We have high hopes for the coming season and seem to be firing on all cyliders.  Our team has grown tremendously and we are experiencing some growing pains.  The team would like to raise $10,000 to pay for team supplies, shoes or books for needy student-athletes, an additional coach, and any other needs that arise that are not covered by our budget.  You can help by signing up and participating in the Sun Run!  Also, Track and Cross Country Athletes will be at the event and will be selling coupon cards for $20 that help with fundraising.  If you would like to make a donation to the program, please contact Head Coach Greg Wenneborg at 520-977-4072 or by email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

We appreciate your support and participation in the 2011 Sun Run 5k and 10k!

All this and a great breakfast! After the race, enjoy a warm pancake breakfast and coffee served by our very own Pima College Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. This is quickly becoming a popular addition to the Tucson running scene.

          Training Advice

How to Run the Half, a mile-by-mile description of the race course

Miles 1-2 From the starting line on Church at the Court Hous/Jacome Plaza north to Sixth and along Sixth to I-10 is all a gentle downhill.  Be careful of starting this first mile too fast.  From Sixth/St. Mary’s you’ll turn south on Bonita and have the whole street to yourselves until you hit Congress. Heading west on Congress to the A-Mountain road at Cuesta is a gradual rise - not very noticeable, but still, a bit uphill. You’ll be on the north side of Congress all the way to Cuesta.  Again, be patient on this stretch.
Miles 3-4 Once you turn south on Cuesta, you will begin to notice a bit of an uphill.  OK, a bit more than a bit.  Almost the same distance as the famed Saguaro hill, the climb up to the “A” on A-Mountain can be broken into a few sections.  Stay to the right side of the road on this whole stretch.  The first piece through the neighborhoods is gradual, so try to get in a steady rhythm without working too hard.
As you hit the parking lot on the right about a half-mile up the hill, you’ll notice a flattening for a couple of hundreds of yards.  This is a good time to re-assess your pace and shake out your arms a bit.  Then you have a quarter mile of steepness to the split at the top of the mountain where we’re planning a water/cytomax stop. The race route will take you to the right, counter-clockwise, with a gorgeous view of the Starr Pass area to the west and the Santa Rita Mountains to the south.  You can see the sparkling observatories of Kitt Peak and the mountains surrounding Baboquivari Peak.
The hill softens a bit as you make the half-mile push for the red-white-and-blue “A.”  There are a couple of false summits as you approach the top, so maintain a steady pace and a smile on the way up.  According to mapmyrun.com, the whole climb is about 1.5 miles with a 509 foot elevation gain.  Not that bad, right?  Once you hit the low brick wall marking the parking areas on the east side, you’re almost to the top. Another hundred yards or so, and you level out for a few steps before plunging downhill.
Miles 4-5 The downhill is probably the hardest part of the course.  Enjoy the pull of gravity, but you’ll want to be careful of running too fast - don’t brake yourself, but don’t overstride too much, either.  Like with the Tucson Marathon, too much too fast will blow out your quads, so be smart on the downhill section.
Miles 6-7 Once you’re off the hill, the half-mile stretch heading east on Congress is pretty easy.  Please stay inside the cones on the south lane of Congress.  You’ll turn south on Grande and stay on the right side of the road all the way down to the bike path entrance just north of 22nd/Starr Pass Blvd. You may be tempted to pick up the pace on this stretch, but it’s probably better to be patient here.  We’ll have a water station, a medical tent, and an ambulance at the dirt lot when you enter the bike path on Grande.  At this point you should be in a nice rhythm.
Mile 7-9 Once on the bike path, you will stay on the right hand side of the bike path and head south for exactly 660 yards then do a U-turn and head back north still staying on the right side of the lane as you pass runners for another 660 yards until the path opens up. (As you can probably tell, we needed this turn-around on the bike path to ensure that the course is exactly 13.1 miles.) You’ll head north on the bike path all the way until St. Mary’s again. Please note, though, that you will run through a construction zone on this strip. The Ashton Company will clear the area for you, but it will be dirt here.  You should be feeling good, so this is a nice place to step up the pace a bit. There are some shady stretches and you’re getting closer to home on this primarily flat stretch.
Mile 9-10 Exiting the bike path onto St. Mary’s is a bit tricky. As you come up the hill off the bike path approaching St. Mary’s, you can either hug the pathway to the right and stay on the narrow sidewalk heading east across the Santa Cruz or you can jump down from the curb to the main roadway. If I were racing it, I would probably hop the curb, but it’s a bit high, perhaps as many as 10”, so be careful here.
As you head under the I-10, you’re about 2/3 of mile from the start/finish line, but you still have almost 4 miles to run. If you feel good, it’s a nice time to start racing,  but also a good place to be patient and conserve some energy if you’re feeling tired.
Miles 10-11 This is a tough mental part of the course: you will head south on Church straight past the finish line as the 5k finishers are either finishing to your left or hanging out cheering for you. But you still have 3.1 miles to go. The first part of the 3.1 miles is east on Congress - most of the 5k runners should be done by the time you hit this stretch, but we’ll have the lane coned into two parts, one for the east-bound trip and one for the west-bound trip. At the east end of Downtown, you cross to the Fourth Avenue underpass so you’ll want to watch out for the rail tracks. You’ll be tired, so be careful here. Still, this is a good place to run hard - you’re almost done, so look ahead and see who you can pick off.
Coming out of the Fourth Avenue tunnel, you’ll turn right onto 9th Street, and head about two blocks east before turning left on Bean Street, then left again on 8th Street and heading back to Fourth Avenue.  I happen to like turns like this: it shakes out my legs and the corners give me something to think about—indeed, you can sneak a peak at competitors.
Miles 11-12 Heading north on Fourth Avenue is a bit annoying: there will be good crowds and a water station for you, but you’ll be climbing a deceptive uphill for about a half-mile to University Avenue. Be patient, but be tough.  You’ll turn right at University and head towards the UA, then do one final U-turn just before you hit Euclid - then it’s back down University and rocket-ship down Fourth Avenue all the way back to Congress. Use the downhill on Fourth and the crowds to your advantage.  You’re almost done so let ‘er rip if you can.
Mile 13 The last mile of the course is downhill on Fourth then up the Fourth Avenue underpass hill, with a finish along Congress and Church. Rock star it here: push the pace, enjoy the shade, and run to the finish line.  You’ll be done in no time—then it’s on to the food, drink, music, relaxation, and free massages!

A note on training for A-Mountain: weekly free social training runs will begin on Monday night, August 22nd.  Be ready to run (or walk) at 5:45 pm—meet at Meet Me at Maynard’s, 400 North Toole.  The route is almost exactly 6.2 miles—we’ll start at Maynard’s and go straight west on Congress, then up and down A-Mountain, and back along Congress to the finish at Maynard’s.  You can go farther or shorter as you wish . . . pace groups are being planned.

Here is a five-week plan for getting comfortable running the 1.5 mile incline of A-Mountain.  It will work for all levels of abilities.

Week One:  Run an easy conversation pace straight down Congress Avenue and up the A-Mountain then back to the Train Depot at Maynard’s.  Run conversation pace—perhaps a 5 or 6 on a scale of 10.
NOTE: This conversation pace should be comfortable and relaxed—you may get a bit fatigued on the hill, but don’t push it.  If you need to walk, by all means, walk up the hill.
NOTE: If you want to do the A-Mountain loop a couple of times before advancing to Week Two, by all means, get comfortable going up the mountain first . . .

Week Two: Start at Maynard’s and run the 1.5 mile warm up.  Do this at a conversational pace—perhaps a 5 or 6 on an a 10-point effort scale Then run strong on the uphill to the gate—perhaps a 7-8 on the effort scale.  Rest at the parking area for 2 minutes, then run strong to the A at the top of the mountain, again at a 7- 8 on the effort scale.  Then jog downhill and run conversation pace back to Maynard’s.  Total distance: 6.2 miles, total effort: 1.5 miles

Week Three: Start at Maynard’s and run the 1.5 mile warm up at an easy, comfortable pace.  Then run strong on the uphill to the gate.  Rest at the parking area for 2 minutes, then run strong to the A at the top of the mountain.  Then jog downhill to the point where the A-Mountain Road divides.  Run strong up the south side of the mountain back to the A.  Then relax and run conversation pace back to Maynard’s.  Total distance: 6.7 miles, total effort: 2 miles.

Week Four: Start at Maynard’s and run the 1.5 mile warm up.  Then run strong on the uphill to the gate.  Rest at the parking area for 2 minutes, then run strong to the A at the top of the mountain.  Then jog downhill to the gate near the parking lot.  Run strong all the way to the A.  Then relax and run conversation pace back to Maynard’s.  Total distance: 7 miles, total effort: 2.2 miles.

Week Five: Start at Maynard’s and run the 1.5 mile warm up.  Then run strong on the uphill to the gate.  Rest at the parking area for 2 minutes, then run strong to the A at the top of the mountain.  Then jog downhill and run conversation pace back to the very bottom of the hill.  Turn around and run fast to the A.  Total distance: 9 miles, total effort: 3 miles.  This is a capstone workout.

Volunteers: Races like this cannot be produced without volunteers.  Last Saturday’s race needed about 100 or so—including the following folks: Steve and Sheryl Felde, Michelle Hawk, Sarah Vular, Brandon Briscoe, Marti Ackerman, Russel Riordan, Marc Janis, Connie Lopez, Stacie LaPoint, Rachel Hilgeford, Dennis Bonilla, Nicole Lund, Aaron Lund, Erin Boland, Sharon Pascoe, Alisha Bashford, Chris Garcia, Jennifer Garcia, Jocie Riley, Tim Bentley, Lucas Tyler, Tina Perry, Jane Swanson, Buddy Martin, Wally Barunda, Roger Shanley, Vanessa Marion, Sandy White, Janet Holland, Sandra Heater, Sue Abramson, Doreen Castillo, Mari Diaz, Greg Gadarian, the gang from Child and Family Resources that managed the 2-mile water station along with Maureen Cunningham, the gang from Educational Enrichment Foundation that managed the 1-mile water station, the gang of young adults from JobCorps, the group from the Children’s Museum Tucson and TMC that managed the Children’s Pavilion, the performers from Elemental Artistry, and the UA student interns Michael Brondello, James Eichberger, Brian MacArthur, Natalie Verges, and Madison Carrol.  Another unsung volunteer is my wife, Tia, who came up with the idea for the sponges and cold water—and who spent the past several months putting up with me as I got ready for this event!

This race is part of The Running Shop Grand Prix, produced by SAR.

We are grateful to Ross Zimmerman and Julia Strange at Tucson Medical Center for developing the concept of the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown – and we’re thankful to the Arizona Daily Star and Caliente for helping implement it. Gabe’s whole family has been devoted to fitness, running, and the Arizona outdoors – we are honored to be able to celebrate the spirit of Gabe and highlight the possibilities for Tucson through the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.

As last year, $10 from each Triple Crown entry will be donated to Gabe’s favorite non-profit, Child and Family Resources.  Additional Tucson-based organizations will receive a portion of the proceeds from the individual events.

                    A Word From Ross Zimmerman

I hope everyone enjoyed the GMT Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday Oct. 9th.  Kelly O’Brien, Gabe Zimmerman’s fiancee, and I ran the half marathon together.  We liked the course a lot and decided Gabe would have liked it, too.  The course passed several places that held memories of Gabe for both of us.  That added to the day.  Our family and friends had very good experiences as well.  The run and the day were a fitting celebration of the life of Gabe Zimmerman and the others dear to us we’ve lost this year.  This was a proactive, positive way to promote personal and societal physical and mental health.  Gabe the social worker would have enthusiastically approved.  Randy Accetta, Julia Strange, and the myriad of folks who helped make this event and the previous two events in the Gabe Z Triple Crown successes have my appreciation and thanks.  We hope this series will continue.

One of the things I’ve learned since Gabe’s passing is how many other people I know and have met who have been touched by the loss of loved ones before their times.  Unfortunately, far too many suffer or perish due to the diseases of overweight, inactivity, and substance abuse, not violence or accident.  There are some things we can do to reduce the risks of violence or accident.  Much more can be accomplished, by taking care of your loved ones and yourself with a positive, active, healthy life.  That gives you and them better lives and better relationships.  On our way home, Kelly reminded me of a bike ride she, Gabe, and I did together.  Up a steep hill, he raced me to the point of stomach upset (and beyond…), all in good fun.  Gabe and I had many, many active adventures together.  I will treasure those until the end of my life, and that’s a comfort.  Go have adventures with your loved ones as well.
As we all know, running shows us the power within ourselves.  If we can get around the Saguaro loop, the ups and downs of daily life are certainly manageable.  If we can climb A-Mountain, we can rise to our other challenges.  Our goal is to motivate the community to aspire to individual and collective greatness – to work alone and work with others towards those goals we find valuable.  To celebrate living, community, and good will.  To live with love, to live with passion to chase dreams.

If you have any questions about the Triple Crown, please contact event organizer Randy Accetta at 991-0733 or at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

                    Date and Time

                    Race Distances and Courses

There are three different events.  Each event has a 3.1 mile option—you can run or walk.  Strollers and children are welcome in all the 5k’s.

You can also enjoy the challenge of the Saguaro East 8-mile loop amongst the beautiful hills of the Rincon Mountains, then test yourself and do the 13.1 mile Get Moving Tucson Half-Marathon featuring A-Mountain.

Run the city and run the desert – or walk and have a great time!

                    Location

TMC Meet Me Downtown is staged in the heart of Downtown Tucson, beginning and ending at La Placita Village at Church and Broadway.
TMC Saguaro National Park Labor Day 8-miler and 5k is held in the beautiful Saguaro National Park East, in the base of the Rincon Mountains.
TMC Get Moving Tucson Half-Marathon, 5k and 1-miler is held in Downtown Tucson, too—with routes that include A-Mountain, the Santa Cruz Riverpath, and the UA-area.

Why the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown?

                    By Ross Zimmerman

Gabriel Zimmerman was the Outreach Director for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Gabe lost his life rushing to help during the horrible shooting of January 8th. Both Gabe and Gabrielle have been strong supporters of health and physical fitness in our great state. We invite you to celebrate Gabe’s love of running and fitness.

Running was in Gabe’s blood. His mother, Emily Nottingham, was a founding member of the Tucson Sun Chaser’s women’s running club and is currently President of the Arizona Trail Association. Gabe’s stepmother, Pam Golden, has held the Master’s women’s course record for the Saguaro National Park 8-mile loop, one of the runs in the Triple Crown. And I am a passionate trail runner and ultramarathoner who has co-administered the Tucson Trail Run Series for 17 years.

But Gabe’s love of running didn’t stop with us: his fiancée, Kelly O’Brien, is a marathon runner who paced Gabe in his first marathon, the 2010 San Diego Rock and Roll. Gabe was also devoted to overall health and fitness: Gabe’s UHS/Rincon High School soccer teams won two state titles, Gabe twice ran the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim, he completed the El Tour de Tucson, and has ridden with me and his brother, Ben, the famous Slick Rock Bike Trail and many other routes in Moab and Tucson.

Gabe lived for several years in downtown Tucson. He ran the streets. He ran A-Mountain and Tumamoc Hill. The downtown 5K and Half Marathon will retrace his steps. His mother, stepmother, and I have all competed in Saguaro Loop.

Our family and Kelly will be running or walking in his honor in this year’s Triple Crown. Involved in many social service organizations, Gabriel was on the board of Child and Family Resources, a Tucson-based non-profit that provides strategic help to parents, children, and families all across Arizona. A portion of your entry fee goes to support CFR.
We invite you to donate in his memory as well.

                    Awards

All registrants for the Triple Crown will receive a RUN TUCSON technical t-shirt.  Everyone who finishes all three events will receive a special prize or medallion, still to be determined.

                    Beneficiaries

Child and Family Resources is the primary beneficiary of the Triple Crown, while each race has a number of local beneficiaries as well, including the following:
                    Children’s Museum of Tucson

Yup, we finally have some of the details: the BE TUCSON Women’s Only 5k and Men’s Mile, produced by SAR and hosted by La Encantada, will feature a women’s only 3.1 mile run and walk, with prizes for overall winners, age group winners, and raffle winners.  The women’s race is open to all ages and abilities.

We’ll also feature a Men’s MIle, with overall and age group awards.

The race is part of a day-long celebration of women’s health and fitness—more details available soon.  Registration will open soon, as well, so check back.  As you can probably tell, we’re putting this together somewhat at the last minute, sort of like we did with the first TMC Meet Me Downtown Run five years ago.  We’ll see what cool things we can come up with!  Suggestions?  Questions?  Email Race Director .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

The Valentine’s Day Race returns to its traditional Sunday morning time slot—with its traditional feel-good, have-fun, and low-cost theme.  Race day registration and packet pick-up available on race morning, Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Geronimo Plaza, 814 E University Blvd, just east of Euclid, from 6:30-7:30 am.

Please note that due to the newly begun construction on Arizona Stadium the course will be modified: instead of running the Arizona Stadium ramps, we will now return to the original course and run the outside of McKale Center—thus, the ups and downs will be much easier!!

The 4 mile Couple’s Relay is designed so that each runner has a running partner. The first runner (male or female) will carry a relay object (probably a flower) and will pass it to the second runner at the completion of the first 2 mile leg, along with a kiss or public display of affection of some sort. The second runner (male or female) will race the final 2 mile leg, handing the relay object to the timers at the finish line.

The 4 Mile Open race is an open event with men’s and women’s categories. Top finishers overall and top three in 10-year age categories will receive playful awards courtesy of the Main Gate Merchants.
The 2 mile walk/jog is non-competitive, and all participants will be eligible for raffle prizes.

The course starts at Main Gate and heads along the UA mall to Arizona Stadium—each leg will include one up-and-down of the football stadium ramps.

12 Tips for Trail Racing, by Randy Accetta

Cross country: natural, earthy, primordial.  Narrow, wooded trails, sweeping grass fields —or in Tucson’s case, harsh desert terrain, cactus, sandy washes, and rattlesnakes.  There’s no water stop here, no lining up by your estimated mile pace.  No stadium-size crowds.  Just you, the ground, and your competitors.  Here are a dozen quick tips for cross country racing.

                                    1. Know the course: You need to know the terrain so check for single track and sandy washes, for hills and other key landmarks.  Especially here in Tucson, be careful about cactus and rocks.  Most of our trail races are pretty rugged locations, so be nimble and keep an eye on where you put your feet.  If possible, jog the course ahead of time so that you can cut the tangents and stay on track.

                                    2. Elbows out at the start: At the start, protect yourself by angling your elbows outward, so that you create space between you and other runners.  Don’t knock over the grandmother next to you, but don’t be afraid to be aggressive.

                                    3. Be patient: Unless the course is so narrow that you will never be able to move up during the race, it is best to start within yourself.  If you get in oxygen debt too early, you’re in for a long, unhappy race, but an easier beginning will allow you to pass others with authority and surge when needed.  Be willing to relax, be patient, and run within yourself.

                                    4. Be aggressive on the hills: Once you’ve worked your way into the race, attack the course.  Surge up short hills.  Be patient during long hills, then surge at the crest of long hills.  Work the downhills.  If you find yourself discouraged while running uphill, remember that all things come to an end, and that this, too, will pass.

                                    5. Pass with authority: Racing is a head game and you can break your competitors by running fast when they don’t expect you to and when they don’t want to.  Throw in a burst of speed for 50-200 meters as you approach and go around corners.  Surge at the crest of hills.  Surge at the flat section at the bottom of a downhill.  If you can dash past tired runners and quickly distance yourself from them, often they’ll be too discouraged to catch up.

                                    6. Follow those who pass you: When someone passes you, don’t let them gap you.  Sticking with them may = give you a burst of positive psychological energy that allows you to maintain the quicker pace – plus, they may lose enthusiasm if they know you’re determined to keep the pace.

                                    7. Relax: You cannot expect yourself to sprint the whole race, so be willing to relax and be patient during parts of the race. Be willing to sit in the pack and let the miles slide by until it’s time to be aggressive

                                    8. Cover the break: When a group breaks away from you, go with it—you don’t need to lead the break, but you must be willing to keep contact.  Even if you are fatigued, maintaining contact with the group ahead of you will keep you motivated.  When you recover from the surge, you will be well-positioned to advance further.

                                    9. Think quick feet: You can speed up your running cadence by getting your feet down fast and bringing your heels around quickly.  Cross country courses in particular force your body to adapt to varied terrain and quick feet will help you navigate treacherous sections of the course.

                                    10. Think quick hands: Quick hands lead to quick feet, so use short, quick arm strokes to drive you forward.  On uphills, lean into the hill and keep your hips forward.  On downhills, lean down the hill and let gravity give you speed.  Avoid wind-milling your arms and keep a normal, fast arm swing.

                                    11. Accelerate around turns: Scampering out of sight is a good way to demoralize opponents and keep yourself aggressive.

                                    12. Be tough: In every race save a few, you’ll reach the point where continuing at your pace seems impossible.  Extreme weariness will set in: your legs will ache, your breathing will be labored, and your mind will urge you to back off and save yourself for later.  However, if you wish to race well, you won’t give in to this seductive voice.  Instead of backing off, you will push ahead, change your cadence, and run on.  Regardless of the discomfort, you will soon recover—your breath will return, the aches will fade.  Your pride will remain.

                                        Saturday, January 7, 2012  /

                                        Description

                                        What is BEYOND?

The events of January 8, 2011 shook our community, affecting each of us deeply. It was a horrible day.  But in the days and months afterward, our community came together in a way it never had before. We supported each other, leaned on each other, and generally looked out for one another. The sense of togetherness was tangible.

BEYOND is a community-wide event to commemorate the anniversary of January 8th, celebrate the spirit of togetherness we felt in the days and months afterward, and re-commit ourselves to working together to build a stronger community every day.  BEYOND is the inaugural event of the Tucson Trails Tribute Fund.

As part of this commemorative effort, SAR is hosting three free running and walking events:
                                        1) Saguaro National Park West, in partnership with the National Park Service
The National Park Service and the Southern Arizona Roadrunners will team up for a free, non-competitive five-mile social run on the roads of Saguaro National Park West.  Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited – but, please, no wheeled vehicles and no pets.  The course will include rolling dirt roads, a bit of pavement, and plenty of gorgeous National Park scenery.  The run will not be timed, but participants must register.  Due to parking and trail usage concerns, this free event is limited to 400 participants.  See route map in photo to right.

                                        Date and Time

                                        What is BEYOND?

Who we are: The core of this coalition began in the weeks after the shootings. Initiated by members of Gabe Zimmerman’s extended family, the goal was to develop outreach programs to encourage community members to come out into our public lands in the Tucson area to strengthen our sense of community, to take advantage of the natural beauty that makes Tucson so special, and with the full awareness that getting out and active with others promotes physical and mental health.

We have now grown into a broad-based coalition of Southern Arizona groups and individuals, including family members of victims of January 8th; nonprofits supporting children and families; bicycling, hiking and running groups; environmental advocates; federal and state land management agencies; nonprofits celebrating Tucson and Southern Arizona; public health providers; and others.

We are all dedicated to honoring friends and loved ones injured and lost on January 8th, acknowledging how the events of January 8th have changed us, celebrating our community, and committing to building a better future together.

What we are doing: As the first anniversary of the shootings approached, we wanted to start an event that was consistent with our mission. We thought the day before the anniversary of the shootings would be an appropriate time to bring our community together in a positive way. Thus was born BEYOND: *Commemorate * Celebrate * Commit*.

BEYOND is a series of events on Saturday, January 7, 2012, taking place from sun up to sun down across Greater Tucson and Southern Arizona.

On this first anniversary of the tragedy, there will be opportunities to walk, hike, run, stroll, be artistic, learn new skills, and generally come together as a community. BEYOND is a community-wide celebration of health, diversity, goodwill, and inclusiveness, and a great opportunity to celebrate our loved ones and this beautiful place we call home.  This is a bittersweet series of events. On Sunday, January 8, other entities will sponsor more somber remembrances and reflections of those hurt and lost.

Why we are doing it:The Southern Arizona community’s response to January 8th showed our strength, our resilience, and our commitment to one another. It showed the love we have for this place and for the people who live here. BEYOND will help assure that Tucson is remembered for its response to the tragedy of January 8 and not the singular event.

The physical and mental health benefits of physical activity and mental engagement are well known. Engaging with others strengthens our sense of community and common purpose. This proactively promotes physical and behavioral health. The activities will be fun, positive, and engaging.

We hope BEYOND will motivate people from all walks of life to come together to celebrate us, to embrace the goodness and decency of our community, creating something good and lasting out of tragedy.

                                          • Rules

The Grand Prix was started in 2005 by the Southern Arizona Roadrunners to help create and foster competition among the SAR community.  It was designed to give a greater number of people recognition for their efforts through out the year.

                                            Age Groups
Your Grand Prix age group for the year will be determined based on your age on January 1, 2011.
This does not affect the age group that you participate in for individual races.

                                            For example….
If you were born on January 15, 1981, you would be 29 at the beginning of the year and compete in the 20-29 age group for the Grand Prix for the year.
Once you turn 30, you compete in 30-34 (or 30-39) age group at individual races but you remain in the 20-29 age group for Grand Prix purposes.

                                            Results Disputes
Participants in the Grand Prix have one month from the date of a race to dispute the results of that race. If your name does not appear in the results, or you feel that the results are inaccurate, you should contact the race director to resolve the issue.
All result disputes will be adjudicated by a Rules Committee consisting of the Club President, the Club Vice-President and the Grand Prix Committee Chair.  If a dispute involves one of these members, the SAR Board of Directors will choose a replacement member for the Rules Committee.

                                            Double Winners
Participants can win awards in only one category and will receive the award with the highest value.  For example, if a participant wins in the Top 5 Overall Category and in the Age Group Category, they will be pulled from the Age Group Category and those below will be bumped up. For example, if a master’s participant wins in the Top 3 Masters Category and the Age Group Category, they will be pulled from the Age Group Category and will receive one award with the highest value.  This change was made to standardize the awards across categories and to give a greater number of people recognition for their efforts throughout the year.

                                            Eligibility
Everyone that is a SAR member as of January 1, 2011 will be automatically entered in the Grand Prix.  To participate in the Grand Prix, you must be a SAR member by July 1, 2011.  If you become a SAR member by July 1, 2011, all Grand Prix races you have participated in will be counted retroactively.  New Members who join after July 1 2011, will not be counted in the Grand Prix, but will be eligible for the Grand Prix in the following year.  If your membership expires after July 1, 2011, you will be pulled from the results.  As of July 1, 2011, all results will be re-calculated based on the July 1, 2011 SAR membership list.  Final results will be calculated based on a cross-referenced list of those who are SAR members on both July 1, 2011 and on the date of the Thanksgiving Cross Country Classic 5K.

                                            Scoring
Your 10 highest scoring races out of 12 will be scored.
