12 Tips for Trail Racing, by Randy Accetta
Cross country: natural, earthy, primordial. Narrow, wooded trails, sweeping grass fields —or in Tucson’s case, harsh desert terrain, cactus, sandy washes, and rattlesnakes. There’s no water stop here, no lining up by your estimated mile pace. No stadium-size crowds. Just you, the ground, and your competitors. Here are a dozen quick tips for cross country racing.
1. Know the course: You need to know the terrain so check for single track and sandy washes, for hills and other key landmarks. Especially here in Tucson, be careful about cactus and rocks. Most of our trail races are pretty rugged locations, so be nimble and keep an eye on where you put your feet. If possible, jog the course ahead of time so that you can cut the tangents and stay on track.
2. Elbows out at the start: At the start, protect yourself by angling your elbows outward, so that you create space between you and other runners. Don’t knock over the grandmother next to you, but don’t be afraid to be aggressive.
3. Be patient: Unless the course is so narrow that you will never be able to move up during the race, it is best to start within yourself. If you get in oxygen debt too early, you’re in for a long, unhappy race, but an easier beginning will allow you to pass others with authority and surge when needed. Be willing to relax, be patient, and run within yourself.
4. Be aggressive on the hills: Once you’ve worked your way into the race, attack the course. Surge up short hills. Be patient during long hills, then surge at the crest of long hills. Work the downhills. If you find yourself discouraged while running uphill, remember that all things come to an end, and that this, too, will pass.
5. Pass with authority: Racing is a head game and you can break your competitors by running fast when they don’t expect you to and when they don’t want to. Throw in a burst of speed for 50-200 meters as you approach and go around corners. Surge at the crest of hills. Surge at the flat section at the bottom of a downhill. If you can dash past tired runners and quickly distance yourself from them, often they’ll be too discouraged to catch up.
6. Follow those who pass you: When someone passes you, don’t let them gap you. Sticking with them may = give you a burst of positive psychological energy that allows you to maintain the quicker pace – plus, they may lose enthusiasm if they know you’re determined to keep the pace.
7. Relax: You cannot expect yourself to sprint the whole race, so be willing to relax and be patient during parts of the race. Be willing to sit in the pack and let the miles slide by until it’s time to be aggressive
8. Cover the break: When a group breaks away from you, go with it—you don’t need to lead the break, but you must be willing to keep contact. Even if you are fatigued, maintaining contact with the group ahead of you will keep you motivated. When you recover from the surge, you will be well-positioned to advance further.
9. Think quick feet: You can speed up your running cadence by getting your feet down fast and bringing your heels around quickly. Cross country courses in particular force your body to adapt to varied terrain and quick feet will help you navigate treacherous sections of the course.
10. Think quick hands: Quick hands lead to quick feet, so use short, quick arm strokes to drive you forward. On uphills, lean into the hill and keep your hips forward. On downhills, lean down the hill and let gravity give you speed. Avoid wind-milling your arms and keep a normal, fast arm swing.
11. Accelerate around turns: Scampering out of sight is a good way to demoralize opponents and keep yourself aggressive.
12. Be tough: In every race save a few, you’ll reach the point where continuing at your pace seems impossible. Extreme weariness will set in: your legs will ache, your breathing will be labored, and your mind will urge you to back off and save yourself for later. However, if you wish to race well, you won’t give in to this seductive voice. Instead of backing off, you will push ahead, change your cadence, and run on. Regardless of the discomfort, you will soon recover—your breath will return, the aches will fade. Your pride will remain.

A little information about the Pima Community College Track and Field/Cross Country Teams…
Over 75 student-athletes are on the roster for the 2010 Track and Field season. Both the Track & Field and Cross Country Teams have enjoyed success at the national level in recent years with an individual national champion coming from Pima in each of the last three years. Pima Cross Country or Track & Field teams have placed in the top 10 at the National Championships 7 times in the last 5 years! Our last national champion was Cholla High School Alumni Aurora Trujillo. She won the national title in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the NJCAA National Championships in May of 2009 and set the school record on the way. The year before that, it was Sahuaro’s Jeremiah Korn in the Shot Put who took home the title.
We have high hopes for the coming season and seem to be firing on all cyliders. Our team has grown tremendously and we are experiencing some growing pains. The team would like to raise $10,000 to pay for team supplies, shoes or books for needy student-athletes, an additional coach, and any other needs that arise that are not covered by our budget. You can help by signing up and participating in the Sun Run! Also, Track and Cross Country Athletes will be at the event and will be selling coupon cards for $20 that help with fundraising. If you would like to make a donation to the program, please contact Head Coach Greg Wenneborg at 520-977-4072 or by email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
We appreciate your support and participation in the 2010 Sun Run 5k and 10k!

All this and a great breakfast! After the race, enjoy a fresh pancake breakfast served by our very own Pima College Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. This is quickly becoming a famous addition to the Tucson running scene.

Rules
The Grand Prix was started in 2005 by the Southern Arizona Roadrunners to help create and foster competition among the SAR community. It was designed to give a greater number of people recognition for their efforts through out the year.
(New for 2010) Age Groups
Your Grand Prix age group for the year will be determined based on your age on January 1, 2010.
This does not affect the age group that you participate in for individual races.
For example….
If you were born on January 15, 1980, you would be 29 at the beginning of the year and compete in the 20-29 age group for the Grand Prix for the year.
Once you turn 30, you compete in 30-34 (or 30-39) age group at individual races but you remain in the 20-29 age group for Grand Prix purposes.
(New for 2010) Results Disputes
Participants in the Grand Prix have one month from the date of a race to dispute the results of that race. If your name does not appear in the results, or you feel that the results are inaccurate, you should contact the race director to resolve the issue.
All result disputes will be adjudicated by a Rules Committee consisting of the Club President, the Club Vice-President and the Grand Prix Committee Chair. If a dispute involves one of these members, the SAR Board of Directors will choose a replacement member for the Rules Committee.
Double Winners
Participants can win awards in only one category and will receive the award with the highest value. For example, if a participant wins in the Top 5 Overall Category and in the Age Group Category, they will be pulled from the Age Group Category and those below will be bumped up. For example, if a master’s participant wins in the Top 3 Masters Category and the Age Group Category, they will be pulled from the Age Group Category and will receive one award with the highest value. This change was made to standardize the awards across categories and to give a greater number of people recognition for their efforts throughout the year.
Eligibility
Everyone that is a SAR member as of January 1, 2010 will be entered in the Grand Prix. To participate in the Grand Prix, you must be a SAR member by July 1, 2010. If you become a SAR member by July 1, 2010, all Grand Prix races you have participated in will be counted retroactively. New Members who join after July 1 2010, will not be counted in the Grand Prix, but will be eligible for the Grand Prix in the following year. If your membership expires after July 1, 2010, you will be pulled from the results. As of July 1, 2010, all results will be re-calculated based on the July 1, 2010 SAR membership list. Final results will be calculated based on a cross-referenced list of those who are SAR members on both July 1, 2010 and on the date of the Thanksgiving Cross Country Classic 5K.
Scoring
Your 10 highest scoring races out of 11 will be scored.
Point System
The point system for each race will award 40 points for first place in a category (e.g. age group or overall) down to 1 point for 25th place.

TMC Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run
Monday, September 6, 2010 / 8 mile & new 5k
Description
Labor Day Monday, September 6, 2010. This scenic course and post-race festivities truly embrace the spirit of the old Southwest, making the Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run a regional favorite. Our rolling 8-mile and 5k courses loop through a cactus forest in the foothills of the scenic Rincon Mountains at Saguaro National Park East. This event has been featured as a Runner’s World Race of the Month.
We are super-excited about the 41st TMC Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run scheduled for Labor Day Monday. All indications are that this will be the most popular Saguaro ever, with over a thousand registrants. It should be a blast, so come on out! Below are some details for the weekend.
Registration
You can still register for the race on Monday morning at Saguaro National Park East from 5:00-6:00 am. If you have not paid, you will need to pay at the front gate and take a ticket to the maintenance yard to pick up your bib number and t-shirt. If you have already paid, walk through the main gates, head to the maintenance yard, and the team of volunteers will take care of you.
• We’re giving away Zorrel technical shirts, the same given away at the Cinco de Mayo 10k (the planned New Balance shirts were out of stock). The race shirts are a poly-blend designed to wick moisture; unfortunately, as with almost every clothing item these days, they run on the small side.
• Remember: put your bib number on the front of your shirt!
Monday Parking and Travel
Please try to car-pool and please do not park in driveways or on the bike lanes. Pima County Sheriff deputies will be on hand to ensure safety, so be considerate of others, obey traffic laws, and be safe when traveling from your vehicle to the race site.
Coming from Phoenix or elsewhere? Check out the race hotel, JW Marriott Starr Pass, for discounts. See below for details.
Event Day Schedule
• 5:00-6:00 am Registration
• 6:20 Announce winner of the 2010 Spirit of Rob Bell Award, presented by Performance Footwear
• 6:23 National Anthem
• 6:27 5k start
• 6:30 8-miler start
• 8:30 Kid’s Race
• 8:45 Begin Spirit of Rob Bell Award, Raffle Prizes, and Awards*
* Raffle prizes have been donated by REI, the Running Shop, Worldly Soles, and Ben’s Bells, plus a few free entries to upcoming SAR races. We’ll have awards for both races - no double-dipping, so overall age group winners will be pulled out from the age group awards.
Miscellaneous
The race starting area will be crowded, so please line up according to expected pace per mile, with 5-minute milers at the front of the line.
No dogs are allowed so don’t bring the pooch! For safety sake, strollers are OK in the 5k, but not the 8-miler. Wheelchair athletes are welcome—but please no bikes, roller blades or anything else with wheels. Headphones are discouraged - if you must wear them, please leave one ear free for safety.
Culligan has donated plenty of refreshing water, with aid stations at approximately 2, 4, 6, and 7 miles. Thanks to Sahuaro High School for handling 2 and 4, Santa Rita High School for handling marker 6, and the Tucson Tri-Girls for handling the 7-mile mark and the 5k turn-around. St. Augustine High School Cross Country team will also be on the course, and we’ll also have the Ham Radio Society of Tucson on course, plus a dedicated ambulance from Rural Metro at the finish line.
Thanks to Waste Management, we have more port-o-johns than ever before, including one around the 4 mile mark. Please do not use the desert to relieve yourself: the Park Service may fine you - and a snake may bite you!!
After the race, enjoy Muscle Milk, XOOD, and plenty of snack food from Sunflower market. Grab a free massage from the massage therapists at the Cortiva Institute, and visit with The Running Shop, REI, Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection, Watershed Management, Ben’s Bells, and event partners.
In particular, please be sure to visit the Tucson Medical Center tent and snag some give-away plunder - TMC has become a leading sponsor of SAR events and their commitment to the health and wellness of our region is to be commended.
The Park Service will also have two areas to visit, so check them out - cool skulls, skins and other fun things. . . .
Weather: The Weather Channel claims it will be around 75 at race start, with a daytime high of only 91.

Beneficiaries
Thanks to the registration fees of participants and the sponsorship dollars of Tucson Medical Center, we’re able to provide funds for the Tucson Children’s Museum for ongoing projects. We provide operating expenses to the Fox Theatre and a small gesture to the Fox Foundation. We provide operations and donations to Cinema La Placita. The common thread for these organizations is their passion to create – they create jobs, they create activities, they create creativity, and we need more of all three here in Tucson.
An additional race beneficiary is the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), an international non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for, and awareness of, children’s hospitals across the country. Tucson Medical Center has been a part of Children’s Miracle Network since 1984, raising more than $7.5 million for the TMC Foundation Children’s Fund to benefit local programs for infants and children. Money raised in Southern Arizona stays here to support wellness programs, purchase life-saving medical equipment and provide health services for children at Tucson Medical Center.
Funds also go to the Southern Arizona Roadrunners and the Children’s Fitness Fund.
Two other charities are also focused on creating, but with the very specific goal of creating a better greater Tucson. Greater Tucson Leadership is a 30-year non-profit devoted to inspiring, promoting, and developing leadership in Tucson, primarily through a 10-session course in issues facing Greater Tucson. Funds from Meet Me Downtown go to GTL’s scholarship programs to help those wishing to learn about civic issues and develop individual and collective leadership plan.
Another beneficiary is a new collaborative effort, Imagine Greater Tucson, a group of local citizens, businesses, organizations, and neighborhoods dedicated to working throughout the greater Tucson region to create a common vision of the place we want to live over the coming decades. Funds from Meet Me Downtown will go towards the visioning process due to start in the fall that will engage as many voices/people in the greater Tucson region as possible. Keep an eye out for it.
Community Partners
We want to thank a host of community partners for help with this event. We urge all runners and walkers to patronize our sponsors and partners:
